A Self-Care Night Routine for Highly Sensitive People

Guest post by Jasmine Rich

Self-Care for HSP’s is the most important tool we can use, and often the most overlooked. Often our desire to help and contribute to the world overshadows the need to help ourselves. That’s why I have adopted the concept of radical self-care. For me, this means putting my needs first and taking some me-time to indulge in pampering rituals without the guilt of being “selfish”

One of the challenges when finding a self-care routine was that I did not enjoy the activities generally accepted as “self-care” because they were all so overwhelming. I have never enjoyed getting my nails done. The smell of acetone and the loud buzzing of the nail drill at the nail salon was not exactly my idea of relaxing.

Another challenge was that products that cater to the needs of highly sensitive people are not exactly accessible. The go-to self-care stores are too overstimulating to walk past at the mall, let alone use in my home.

So I decided to create my own products, and curate products from other small businesses to create a one-stop-shop for all things self-care that are fragrance-free, natural, and 100% calming. I call this shop Allure of Calm. I think “calm” is a mysterious quality that evades many of us as HSPs. We are always searching for ways to find “calm” but the path is not always clear. I hope to help you find calm with a curated array of highly sensitive-friendly products.

Here’s my night routine that is the big hug I need at the end of my day:

Step 1. Take a nice warm shower using Neutral Body Soap

This soap is made from all-natural ingredients and smells like, well soap. I don’t know about you, but after a long day, the last thing I want is to be overwhelmed with the smell of flowers, fruit, and whatever scent is popular that season. I just want to be clean. This soap delivers exactly that with skin-nourishing ingredients such as shea butter and honey.

During my shower, I like to focus on how the water feels against my skin, and think about the things I am grateful for from the day.

Step 2. Nourish my skin with Unscented Body Lotion

I love the feeling of this lotion. It feels like a cool yogurt and is completely odorless. This all-natural lotion does so well right after the shower to soak right into my skin and provide the nourishment it needs. I love how this lotion does not leave a sticky residue on my skin like lotions containing thick ingredients which can be so uncomfortable.

Step 3. Pop on Beauty Kitchen under eye masks and Jade roll my face.

After my skincare routine I like to take a little moment for some extra indulgent pampering. The Beauty Kitchen under eye masks feel like cool jello under your eyes and provide extra nourishment for that delicate part of your face. During this time, I take my Jade Roller from the refrigerator and gently roll out any tension I may be carrying in my face or neck. I like to imagine I’m rolling away any negative thoughts that may be causing me distress.

Step 4. My favorite part of my routine- the Calm Massage Oil Candle

I love candles, but they don’t love me. The fragrance can be too overpowering for me, although I love the ambiance they create. I wanted to make a candle that still gives a sensory experience, and creates the ambiance I love. So became the line of Massage Oil Candles. The Calm candle is best for use at night. It contains Cherry Kernal Oil and Kava Kava to melt away tension in your body and calm down your nerves right before bed.

I light the wood wick and enjoy the soft crackling before I put on the calming Spotify playlist that accompanies the candle. I listen to the music and relax as a pool of oil forms. Once the candle is ready, I blow it out and allow the oil to cool for a quick moment. I pour the oil into my hands and rub the warm oil onto my neck, and upper back. I finish off with a nice foot massage and use my Gua Sha tool for any, especially tense areas.

After my routine, I am ready to drift into sleep.

I hope you find some gems to add to your own self-care routine. Self-care is not just about pampering, it is also about mindset. I like to spend a few moments each night to journal. One of the best tools I have found to get into a positive mindset and take more control over my emotions is the Brain Training Course by Julie Bjelland. If you haven’t checked it out yet, I highly recommend it! You can use this link to access the course.
