"The Adventures of Niko: The Highly Sensitive Dog" Hits #1 on Amazon's New Release in Children's Books!
Celebrating the Unique Traits of Highly Sensitive and Neurodivergent Children
[June 2024] – Julie Bjelland, LMFT, and Carol Huckle, co-authors of the children's book series, "The Adventures of Niko: The Highly Sensitive Dog," are thrilled to announce that their book has reached #1 on Amazon’s list of New Releases in Children's Books. This delightful series introduces young readers to Niko, a highly sensitive dog, and his best friend, Juju, who is autistic, as they embark on adventures that highlight the importance of embracing differences and the beauty of being unique.
Set in vibrant, enchanting worlds—from the bustling city to the serene Sunflower Farm—each story in the series provides a rich, engaging narrative that promotes empathy, kindness, and self-acceptance. Illustrated with charming artistry, the books are designed to resonate deeply with highly sensitive and neurodivergent children and anyone who feels a bit different.
In Book One, Niko and Juju travel through the Magical Redwood Tree Portal, where every creature understands and accepts them. They meet a host of characters, including Buttercup, a book-loving calf, and Blueberry, a joyous blue-footed booby, whose dynamic personalities enrich the tale.
Julie Bjelland's personal experiences as a sensitive and autistic individual and her professional background make her uniquely suited to create a series that provides comfort and understanding to its readers. "This series is close to my heart," says Julie. "It reflects the journey many sensitive and neurodivergent children face and the powerful message that they are accepted and celebrated."
Carol Huckle, co-author with experience as a children’s librarian, adds, "Working with Julie to bring these characters to life has been a joy. Children need to see themselves in the stories they read. Niko and his friends offer that mirror, showing them that their sensitivity is a gift."
